Inge Tielen

So tell us, who are you?

‘My name is Inge Tielen and I live in Eindhoven. In my free time, I like going to restaurants or going out for drinks with my friends. In addition, I enjoy cooking a wide range of things and have a love-hate relationship with jogging. I am a huge wine enthusiast and am currently following various courses to learn more about it.’

“I was involved with client discussions in my first week, which allowed me to quickly start building a relationship with clients.”

Meet Inge. A food lover, connector, Consultant Indirect Tax and solver at PwC Netherlands.

How did you end up at PwC and what exactly do you do?

‘I first encountered PwC at a company open day when I was still studying. My first taste of what it would be like to work for PwC was during the Tax & Legal Summer Job. I had a positive feeling and decided to join PwC as a working student during my Master's degree. In the meantime, I have worked for around 2.5 years in the ‘Middle Market & Public Sector’ VAT team in Eindhoven. This team offers VAT-related advice to a wide range of clients. This can vary from evaluating whether a specific VAT exemption is applicable, to offering advice about how VAT should be handled in an international supply chain.’

Why did you choose PwC?

‘I opted for PwC because of the people! The nice atmosphere and dynamics within the team make a real difference for me.’

What caught your intention when you first started at PwC?

‘You are immediately given a lot of freedom and responsibility. For example, I was involved with client discussions in my first week, which allowed me to quickly start building relationships with clients. Because we work with other colleagues in an open office space, it is very easy to ask questions and you often have interesting conversations.

What is your academic background?

‘I did a Bachelor's in Tax Law at Maastricht University, and then attended the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam to do a Master's in Tax Law, with a specific focus on Indirect Taxes.’

What does your working day generally look like?

‘No two days are actually the same. The day often involves a combination of meetings with colleagues or clients, and compiling advice or presentations. And while I might work from the Eindhoven office one day, I may have to visit a client the next day or have an appointment in our office in Amsterdam.’

“From the moment you start working for PwC, you work with a career coach to examine your development possibilities.”

What do you enjoy about your work?

‘I enjoy collaborating with colleagues within and outside my team. Clients have challenging issues that often involve various means of taxation. To give clients the most comprehensive advice possible, we also regularly collaborate with colleagues from other tax teams, such as Corporate Tax or Transfer Pricing.’

What is still left on your bucket list?

‘I would still like to run a half marathon.’

Which project are you most proud of?

‘I had the chance to broaden my knowledge by taking part in an ESG-related project. These activities are completely out of my comfort zone as VAT advisor, but that is exactly why they have boosted my development. In addition, I gain a lot of energy and enjoyment when intensively collaborating with colleagues from other disciplines, like Assurance and Advisory, during such projects.’

How does PwC help you in your chosen career path?

‘From the moment you start working for PwC you work with a career coach to examine your development possibilities. I really like such discussions, and they offer a lot of specific pointers. Based on your interests, you also have the opportunity to follow various training courses, both professional in nature and in relation to (soft)skills.’

What do you think about the work-life balance at PwC?

‘PwC allows you to personally manage your agenda, so that you can, for example, start slightly later or have time to exercise. Naturally, it can occasionally be busy and you sometimes have tight deadlines, but I see that a lot of attention is being given to the work-life balance, and that regular workload scans are carried out to reduce workload.’

What would you like to say to your future colleagues?

‘Pop out for a coffee some time! A great deal is possible at PwC, and all you have to do is mention it to someone.’
