Peter Paul Hoek

Tax Reporting & Strategy Senior Director

Why did you choose PwC?

‘During the final phase of my master’s degree, I was leaning towards accountancy because I knew that was what I wanted to pursue. I observed at the time that most accountancy firms offer challenging work and also focus on supporting individual professional growth. This made it hard to choose. That all changed when I attended several PwC events, where I immediately felt welcome. This was because I first thought that PwC was very hierarchical and formal, but that proved not to be the case and I actually experienced a high degree of personal attention and a welcoming culture.’

“PwC offers you every opportunity to strike a satisfactory work-life balance.”

Meet Peter Paul. An optimist, racing cyclist, registered accountant, team player and solver at PwC.

What exactly do you do? Can you tell us more about your work content?

‘I oversee a diverse group of talented colleagues, where we advise and assist clients on matters relating to their financial and tax management. We help organisations prepare their financial and tax statements for shareholders and the tax authorities, for example. We also help clients to continue digitising internal processes to reinforce the reliability of their financial and tax data. These may be smaller projects lasting several days or projects where you work with many colleagues from different disciplines. I also hold the human capital position within the management team of our business unit, ensuring we have the right emphasis in terms of recruitment and talent development.’

What’s your average working day like?

‘This is very diverse and varies from day to day. It is often a combination of consulting with or working for clients, together with our teams. I also have development discussions, work on the further evolution of our products and solutions for our clients.’

“If you like varied work with lots of challenge and interesting clients, join our community of solvers.”

What do you like about your work?

‘The variety of issues and the opportunity to work in different teams. I also appreciate my co-workers very much, as for every challenge I can work with a different specialist on a client solution. I consider myself lucky to have such colleagues and that we really work as a community of solvers to help our clients progress.’

Which project are you most proud of?

‘I’m especially proud of our team. By helping our clients with their tax and financial data, we jointly contribute to a more transparent and straightforward world of finance.’

How does PwC help with your career path?

‘No two people are the same. That also applies to a career at PwC. You basically choose your own path in my experience. In exploring the possibilities, PwC offers many points of reference and lifelines to make choices, should you need them.’

What can you tell us about your team?

‘Within Tax Reporting & Strategy, we work in country subgroups. Your base is the office you live closest to. You work together in alternating teams with the partner/director in charge, an assignment manager, experienced colleagues and juniors. We also work on a daily basis with colleagues in Poland and Portugal. For international assignments, we also collaborate with colleagues around the world.’

What do you think of the work-life balance at PwC?

‘A great deal is possible within PwC and you have the lead. PwC offers you every opportunity to strike a satisfactory work-life balance. We are of course a group of ambitious people and like to help our clients with important issues, which does create pressure at times. But if, on the other hand, my family requires more attention, there is plenty of scope at PwC to provide that and to strike that personal balance.’
