The 28th CEO Survey by PwC shows that the levels of climate-friendly investments by companies is increasing while at the same time also leading to higher revenues. CEOs indicate that the benefits of climate-friendly investments are slowly becoming visible.

This is a familiar picture for Joukje Janssen, climate expert at PwC Netherlands. ‘Climate change remains a top priority for CEOs. Most CEOs clearly see the broad strategic benefits of climate-friendly investments. They are well aware of how crucial such investments are for the choices made by potential employees, consumers and – not to be forgotten – investors.’

Climate-friendly investing: differences between companies per sector

According to Janssen, there are also significant differences between companies within a single sector. ‘There are a few frontrunners in every sector when it comes to climate-friendly investing. Behind them is a large group of companies that – largely driven by legislation – are increasingly engaged in sustainability. But this is mainly a long-term effort. Most executives still find it difficult as they are already facing enough short-term challenges. Meanwhile, they have to adjust their policies and their goals and ambitions for the next five to ten years without knowing exactly what they will see in return.’
